Mist Trail leading up to Vernal Fall

Happy Isle to top of Vernal Fall,
1.5 miles

Two trails lead to Little Yosemite Valley - the Mist Trail and the John Muir Trail. They diverge after the Vernal Fall bridge and meet again at the top of Nevada Fall. Most hikers take the Mist Trail going up and the JMT coming down. Both are wonderful experiences. The Mist Trail has many steps and can be very wet in spring and early summer when the fall is in full bloom.

Vernal Fall to Nevada Fall, 1.7 miles

The trail quickly becomes very steep again, climbing up the north side of Nevada Fall. At the top is a restroom. A 0.2-mile side-trip leads to the overlook at the top of the fall.

Nevada Fall to Little Yosemite Valley,
1 mile

After a short uphill the trail levels into Little Yosemite Valley. Watch for signs to the required, designated camping area.

Return via the John Muir Trail

At the top of Nevada Fall cross the bridge and continue down the trail. Wonderful views of Half Dome, Liberty Cap, and Clouds Rest soon appear. Part way down you could re-connect with the Mist Trail, but the many steps by that route are difficult to negotiate. Staying on the John Muir Trail provides a somewhat more gradual descent.
