Fremont Lake, Hoover Wilderness, CA

Fremont Lake

Fremont Lake in the Hoover Wilderness is an excellent long-weekend destination with plenty of room for campsites and some of the best fishing in area. The trailhead at Leavitt Meadow is right off Highway 108 on the eastern side of Sonora Pass. The 8-mile hike has some steep sections. Once at your camp, however, you are within day-hiking distance of a number of other good lakes such as Chain of Lakes. Wilderness permits are available at kiosk at the trailhead and bear canisters are required.

Hungry Packer Lake, Sabrina Basin, CA

Hungry Packer Lake

Hungry Packer Lake in the Sabrina Basin is a spectacular destination for a multi-day trip. Although the 6½-mile hike to the lake can be done in a single day, the 2000-foot elevation gain can be draining. Once at the lake backpackers are within easy walking distance of several other beautiful lakes and the multitude of lakes scattered about the Sabrina Basin. Camping space is limited and the 11,100-foot elevation can mean some chilly nights, but the fishing is excellent and the scenery is difficult to beat anywhere in the Sierra. The trailhead is at Sabrina Lake on the eastern side of the Sierra near Bishop.
