Set Up Camp Near Barney Lake

Despite the limitations on campsites and the popularity of the lake, Barney Lake's setting is so beautiful that it warrants at least a one-night stop. Since no camping or campfires are allowed within ¼ mile of Barney Lake, hike to the upper end of the lake and a ¼-mile beyond to several adequate sites. The campsites can be found just off the trail along the granite ridge beyond the lake, but getting water requires a trek down to the creek. The preferred campsites are a little farther on. The trail descends to make its first crossing of Robinson Creek where good campsites can be found among the trees and with easy access to water.

Fishing

Fishing for brook trout is fair in Barney Lake. The upper end of the lake is the most productive, especially in late afternoon.

Explore the Area

Several excellent day hikes are available for those camped near Barney Lake. Following the trail to the west for 3½ miles, hikers reach Robinson Lakes at the foot of Crown Point. Turning another way from Robinson Lakes, after 1¼ miles you arrive at Peeler Lake to the north of Crown Point. Cross to its west shore and you are in Yosemite National Park.

Peak Bagging

A class 2 route up Crown Point is accessed from Snow Lake. The entire area to the south is very popular with mountaineers and rock climbers, with destinations and routes too numerous to list here.

Of note, however, are the spires to the south of Barney Lake up Little Slide Canyon. And nearby, The Incredible Hulk, a spectacular granite spire with a sheer wall rising 1,200 feet. Read details in R. J. Secor's The High Sierra: Peaks, Passes, and Trails.
