The Trail to Little Yosemite Valley

The trail leading from Yosemite Valley to Little Yosemite Valley is steep and demanding, but with two spectacular waterfalls along the way and views of surrounding peaks, hikers find the climb one of the most rewarding in the park.

Two trails lead to Little Yosemite Valley - the Mist Trail and the John Muir Trail. They diverge after the Vernal Fall bridge and meet again at the top of Nevada Fall. Most hikers take the Mist Trail going up and the JMT coming down. Both are wonderful experiences. The Mist Trail has many steps and can be very wet in spring and early summer when the fall is in full bloom.

The trail quickly becomes very steep again, climbing up the north side of Nevada Fall, between the fall and Liberty Cap. At the trail junction at the top is a restroom. A 0.2-mile side-trip leads to the overlook at the top of Nevada Fall.

Nevada Fall to Little Yosemite Valley,

1.2 mile

After an uphill trudge, the trail levels into Little Yosemite Valley. The trail splits, the left one heading directly toward Half Dome and the right branch following the river. Either trail will take you to the designated camping area. Watch for signs.

Return via the John Muir Trail

At the top of Nevada Fall cross the bridge and continue down the John Muir Trail. Wonderful views of Half Dome, Liberty Cap, and Clouds Rest soon appear. Part way down you could re-connect with the Mist Trail, but the many steps by that route are difficult to negotiate. Staying on the John Muir Trail provides a somewhat more gradual descent.

Keeping a light pack while still enjoying comfort on the trail and in camp is always a balancing act.

Footwear

Since I do most of my hiking on trails, I have given up heavy boots and have switched to a light trail shoe such as the Merrell Men's Trail Glove 5 Hiking Shoe. Those seeking ankle support or something more rugged for off-trail use, will naturally want to explore more traditional boots.

Headlamps

A headlamp is the most versatile flashlight for the back country. In an emergency, hiking at night, it is invaluable. Around camp it leaves hands free to prepare meals or get ready for the sleep. Black Diamond is the best-known brand, but many others probably work nearly as well.
